The research councils assess applications to the fund, the board provides strategic direction and, together with the councils, offers research-related advice, while the thematic committees allocate funding within politically defined themes.

The Board of Directors

The Board provides strategic direction for the Fund and distributes funding among the research councils. The Board does not award grants itself. It consists of nine distinguished researchers appointed by the Minister for Higher Education and Science following an open call.

Research councils

The five research councils award grants for research activities based on researchers’ own initiatives. The Board of Directors appoint the council members following an open call to ensure that, collectively, the research councils cover all scientific research fields.
